San Diego police and paramedics were called Friday afternoon after a fatal dog attack in a city park.
According to SDPD, two people were attacked around noon, one man by his own three dogs at Mesa Viking Park. A witness told NBC 7 that the man was being mauled when another person tried to help him and was also attacked.
Both victims were taken to a hospital after the attack, where the dog’s owner was pronounced dead, SDPD Officer Jose Perales told NBC 7.
The condition of the second victim is unknown at this time, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The dogs’ owner was identified as Pedro Luis Ortega, 26, a spokesperson for the San Diego County Department of Medical Examiner told NBC7 on Sunday.
“Upon arrival, our humane officers worked collaboratively to locate two of the dogs. [that] They were still loose and I confiscated a third dog that had been contained in a car,” Nina Thompson, public relations director for the humane society, told NBC 7. After that, the San Diego Humane Society took the three dogs. and placed them in his care for the mandatory quarantine due to bites.

A second owner relinquished the three dogs and agreed to have them humanely euthanized by SDHS. According to the dogs’ co-owner, they were all a mix of bully breeds, Thompson told NBC 7 on Sunday.
“As a result of the ongoing investigation, the decision was made to euthanize the victim’s three dogs,” Thompson said.
