MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A man is charged with aggravated assault that resulted in the death of a 77-year-old man.
Napatryan Jones, 27, is charged with aggravated assault resulting in death.
On Tuesday, November 26, officers responded to a call of a fight at Union Avenue and Cleveland Street.
The 77-year-old victim, Eddie Bond, was found at Cleveland Street and Eastmoreland Avenue. suffering head injuries.
He had swelling of his eyes and lacerations on his forehead, according to the affidavit.
Bond was disoriented and confused about what happened to him, according to police.
Police say he refused treatment from the Memphis Fire Department.
Shortly after 4:00 p.m., Bond arrived at Exxon at 1003 Union Avenue, where he was still disoriented and confused by his injuries.
He was transferred to this hospital in critical condition. where he later died from his injuries.
A witness told police he saw Bond being assaulted on Union Avenue, where he was standing on a bench.
The witness described the location where it occurred as a place where homeless people go to get shelter from the weather.
Investigators recovered surveillance video from 1331 Union Avenue that showed a man in a white T-shirt attacking Bond shortly after 2:35 p.m., according to police.
The suspect hit Bond in the head, causing him to fall face down on the concrete and he was on the ground for three minutes without moving, according to the affidavit.
Investigators also recovered surveillance video from the Exxon at 1355 Union Avenue that showed clear photographs of the suspect.
Surveillance video was also pulled from the Tops Bar-BQ at 1286 Union Avenue that showed the same man in red pants harassing another elderly man just before the assault on Bond.
An officer recognized the person in the photographs as Jones because he arrested him for shoplifting and had executed a pickup warrant for him in the past.
Jones was identified in a photograph of six people.
He was arrested and admitted he was at 1331 Union Avenue, but said Bond hit him first, according to the affidavit.
He said he then hit Bond and left, but surveillance video showed Jones running toward the garage chasing the victim, according to the affidavit.
The victim’s cause of death is still pending further investigation by the West TN Regional Forensic Center.
Jones is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
