Suspected Wisconsin shooter was teenage student at Abundant Life Christian School: Police

The person suspected of having carried out a Shooting at Abundant Life Christian Schoola private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday was a teenage student at the school, police said.

The officers responded to a call of an active shooter at the school just before 11 a.m., Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said during a news conference. When officers arrived, they found “multiple victims with gunshot wounds.” No officers fired shots during the incident.

Six people were injured, including two students who were in critical condition. Four of those people, three students and a teacher, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Two of those people had been discharged Monday afternoon.

According to Barnes, the alleged shooter was found by police deceased in the building. She was identified as a 15-year-old student.

The shooter’s family was cooperating with investigators after the shooting, the police chief said.

Police were working to find “as many answers as possible” while interviewing witnesses and obtaining search warrants for additional information, Barnes said.

Barnes said the shooting was confined to one space, but did not specify whether it was a classroom. A gun was recovered at the scene.

The other deceased person was the alleged shooter, according to the Madison Police Department.

“This is something we all prepare for, but we hope we never have to do it,” the police chief said. “We are still methodically cleaning that school, cleaning all the vehicles and making sure there are no other threats to this community, which we believe there are not.”

Where is Abundant Life Christian School?

Abundant Life Christian School, founded in 1978, is a private school located at 4901 E. Buckeye Road in Madison, Wisconsin. It has about 390 students, from kindergarten to high school, according to its website.

The school serves about 200 families from about 56 different churches in the greater Dane County area, according to its website, including the greater Madison area and its surrounding communities.

A 12:38 p.m. post on the school's Facebook page said the school had an "active shooter incident."

"Please pray for our Challenger family," the post read.
