Amarillo launches 911 Nurse Navigation program

AMARILLO, Texas (KEYU) -The City of Amarillo is launching a new program in partnership with local EMS provider American Medical Services (AMR) and Global Medical Response (GMR).

Amarillo is the second city in Texas to implement this service.

Nurse Navigation is a program that redirects non-life-threatening emergencies to a licensed nurse who can provide the following services:

  • Personalized medical advice
  • Connection to local urgent care centers, telehealth appointments with doctors, or other resources
  • Arrange transportation through ride-sharing services

This program ensures that ambulances, fire trucks, and emergency rooms are available for emergencies while providing patients with more efficient care for non-life-threatening issues.

“Once we treat it, we have evidence-based clinical medicine to decide whether this is life-threatening or not,” said Gerad Troutman, MD, director of Emergency Medical Response. “If it is not life-threatening, we will provide you with the appropriate level of medical care you need and deserve.”

While each emergency varies depending on the injury or situation, Amarillo Emergency Center will get you to the right person.

“Anyone who calls 911, we will process that call and try to get you the help you need. So this gives us another avenue to provide care to that person without having to occupy an ambulance at the same time,” said Lt. Aaron Sawyer, Amarillo Fire Department.
