Rubi Patricia Vergara was a talented young teenager who often made handmade gifts for others and shared her musical talents with many, family friends said at funeral services held Saturday morning.
Vergara, 14, was a student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, where a fellow student shot her dead on Monday. Professor Erin West, 42 years old, He also died in the attack.
âHe was a quiet, gentle spirit who cared deeply about others,â said City Church Senior Pastor Tom Flaherty. “But Rubi also had a faith beyond his years.”
Vergara’s services were held at City Church, which is adjacent to the school. West’s funeral is scheduled for Monday at Doxa Church in Madison, according to his obituary.
Two other injured students remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition but were stable, UW Hospital said.
A family friend, Dawn Moris, spoke of Vergara’s compassion and empathy. Vergara made personalized birthday cards for her loved ones with digital artwork, origami, and started knitting. Moris showed those present in the congregation a small potato with a smiling face crocheted by Vergara.
“He brought a caring and creative approach to everything he did,” Moris said.

Vergara played keyboard in a family worship band and could hear a song and play it on the piano, Moris said. As a singer, he had a special talent for harmonizing and âsang like an angel,â Moris said.
Vergaraâs aunt played her nieceâs favorite song, âShouldersâ by King & Country, on guitar during the service. His uncle, Andy Remus, thanked the people of Madison for supporting his family last week.

Police say the shooter, 15-year-old student Natalie âSamanthaâ Rupnow, shot herself at school and died at a Madison hospital. Police have said they were in contact with a man in California who authorities said was planning to attack a government building. Rupnow’s motivation for the attack remains a key part of his investigation.
