Driver escapes serious injury when semi drives off I-55 overpass in Plainfield

A driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries when a truck went off an overpass along Interstate 55 and landed on railroad tracks Sunday morning in southwest suburban Plainfield, authorities said. .

Around 9:59 a.m., the Plainfield Fire Protection District was called to the area of ​​I-55 and U.S. Route 30, where a truck had left the interstate, according to a Facebook post. of the fire district. A truck carrying chicken broth and disinfectant wipes was involved in a crash with another vehicle on I-55 and rolled onto train tracks under the interstate, according to the post.

The driver was outside the vehicle when authorities arrived and was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the second vehicle refused to be treated by paramedics.

Firefighters at the scene contained a small diesel spill.

A portion of I-55 was closed as crews worked to remove debris. Train traffic was expected to remain closed for “an extended period of time” until the truck was removed from the tracks, fire officials said.
