Motorists have been warned of serious delays on the A27 today after a slow-moving convoy carrying sensitive freight traveled down the road at just 12mph.

The slow-moving convoy is carrying two large pieces of electrical equipment from the port of Shoreham in West Sussex to a substation near Uckfield in the east.

The 24-mile journey, which includes traveling on the A27, A26 and A22, is expected to take between six and eight hours.

There are diversions on the A27 eastbound, with motorists advised to travel via the Devil’s Dyke roundabout and westbound from Lewes Road.

Lane one of the A27 eastbound road from Devil’s Dyke Road to the A23 roundabout will remain open to divert traffic onto the bypass.

Several junctions towards the A27 are also closed.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Motorists are asked not to follow satellite navigation systems but to follow existing diversion signs.”
