Extraordinary CCTV footage shows a series of car crashes at ‘Britain’s most dangerous junction’, where thirteen accidents have occurred in two months.

Several cars ended up overturning, while one collided with a huge lorry at the A521 junction in Cheadle, Staffordshire.

Fortunately no one has died, but locals feel it is only a matter of time if nothing is done.

They blame misleading passing signs and faded road markings for the staggering number of accidents, which have caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Doorbell footage from Councilman Gary Bentley’s nearby home captured the dramatic scenes. Gary said he has counted 13 smashes since August.

A video shows a car failing to detect yield markings and accelerating over the lines before being hit by a truck.

Another clip shows an SUV being hit by a VW Golf before being sent rolling down the road onto the sidewalk.

The most recent accident occurred on Thursday (October 17) when a car and a van collided at the intersection.

Residents are now pushing for the council to make changes to the crossing, to help prevent future accidents and potentially deaths.

Conor Bernard Devine, owner of the nearby Huntsman pub, has been counting the number of days between each success, which currently stands at four.

The 55-year-old said: “You hear a big bang, you run out and there’s a car on the roof again.”

It’s a matter of time before someone dies out there.

‘We’re on a four-day streak right now. We’ve been here for 15 years, it’s always been bad because of accidents.

‘For some reason, it’s getting worse. I don’t know if they are road markings or not.

“Three have been very serious and then there have been a couple of small fender benders.

“An Aldi supermarket is also being built which will bring more traffic to the town.”

Gary, an independent councilor on High Peak Council, has called for traffic lights to be installed.

He said: ‘It’s a busy junction. We think it could be the most dangerous in Britain; This has been the case in recent weeks.

‘We were all worried about road problems and people coming from out of town, most of the accidents are from people outside the area.

‘A couple of weeks ago a car passed by and I didn’t know I had to stop. There were two. One was hit by a car and another by a truck. We attribute it to the faint lines.

‘The council drew a line. But last week’s accident was on the other side, where they didn’t paint. They only painted one side of the road. Who does that?

‘One side is beautifully painted, the other side cannot be seen. I wanted the signs to change from yield to stop, that’s the least I want.

‘The ideal would be for there to be a traffic light. We had another intersection that caused a death, but they have had a traffic light for 18 months. That’s what I’m pushing for.

“We have destroyed cars worth £170,000 in just six weeks. It happens all the time. “Not only do we have these big accidents, we also have small accidents.”

Gary says he is worried about his father Alan, 84, who lives nearby and often walks down the street.

He added: “It’s been happening for years, but it seems to have gotten worse this year.” I can only attribute it to road maintenance, potholes.

‘There were no white lines at the end. There is a gift sign at the top.

‘This is my corner, I love my corner. We all get along, we all help each other. The only thing that disappoints him is the crossroads.”

Dad Alan, who has lived in the area for 60 years, said: “It’s not safe.” I’d like a big roundabout, a huge roundabout to slow down, or traffic lights.’

Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways, said the accidents were being investigated.

He said: ‘Once we have all the information we will see if any action is required on the ground.

‘Keeping our roads safe remains our priority and we listen to residents and work with local communities if they have concerns about road safety in their area.;
