Canyon ISD releases statement regarding removing full text of the Bible from libraries

CANYON, Texas (KEYU) -Canyon ISD has issued a statement regarding the removal of the full text of the Bible from its library.

“Recent reports claiming that Canyon ISD has removed the Bible from our schools do not tell the whole story. The Bible has always been and continues to be available in our schools to support educational resources and meet all TEKS requirements. This long-standing practice has not changed. Additionally, our libraries contain books about the Bible, including Bible stories, which remain available to our students.

Following the passage of House Bill 900, Canyon ISD conducted a comprehensive review of library materials to ensure compliance with updated state guidelines.

“After receiving clarification from Representative Patterson regarding library content, we reevaluated the guidelines and are pleased to have the Bible available in each of our Canyon ISD libraries.”

An article from The Texan says the ban is due to compliance with House Bill 900, also known as the Restriction of Explicit and Designated Educational Resources for Adults (READER) Act.

The article also states that Canyon ISD Superintendent Darryl Flusche wrote that “the standard for library content prohibits books that have a single instance of sexual content… Therefore, HB900 does not allow numerous books, including the text complete Bible, are available in the school library.”
