Chicago birria dish lands on NYT list of best dishes in the US

A recent New York Times List named the 26 best restaurant dishes in the United States in 2024, and a birria dish found in Chicago was the one chosen.

The birria plate in Ocotlán Birrieríawhich has two locations in the southeast corner of the city, was highlighted on the annual list.

With a recipe dating back almost a century, the dish was hailed for its simplicity in an establishment that smells like stewed goat during business hours.

Birrieria Ocotlán has branches at 4007 East 106th Street and 8726 South Commercial Avenue.

While the birria was the only Chicago representative, the ham sandwich at Mike’s Famous Ham Place in Detroit and the Lebanese ice cream at Leila in Detroit were honored, comprising the Midwest representation of the list.
