Future center for homeless women, children in Memphis burglarized, setting back opening date by months

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – An organization dedicated to helping people fight drug addiction halted its expansion after the newly acquired building that would be used to help homeless women and children was burglarized.

Warriors Center Memphis was preparing to open its new program in the former Ashton Place Care and Rehabilitation Center located at 3030 Walnut Grove Road before vandals destroyed it.

David Vincent, executive director of Warriors Center, says he walked through the doors for a normal tour on Dec. 2 and described it as a disaster scene.

“We started walking down the halls and started seeing burglary tools and saws lying on the floor,” he said. “We walked a little further and saw lots of copper and lots of copper plumbing fixtures…”

Bullet casings and shell casings were also found scattered all over the ground.

Memphis police officers found a car full of copper materials after searching the building. While someone was being questioned, that person was later released.

Vincent said they planned to open the future women’s rehabilitation center in six months; Now, he said they could open in 12 to 15 months.
