How much snow did Chicago get? A look at totals from around the area

Snow fell across much of the Chicago area overnight and into Friday morning, but how much snow actually fell in the region?

Although the snow made travel conditions difficult and led to a ground stop at Chicago O’Hare International AirportIt only amounted to a couple of inches.

But some areas saw more than others, with totals as high as 4 inches.

Here’s a look at the area-wide totals so far:

  • Lindenhurst, Illinois 4.0
  • Naperville, Illinois 3.9
  • Woodridge, Illinois 2.5
  • Addison, Illinois 2.4
  • Ohare Airport, IL 2.1
  • Yorkville, Illinois 2
  • Romeoville, Illinois 1.7
  • Hanover Park, Illinois 1.3
  • Marengo, Illinois 1.2
  • Midway Airport, Illinois 0.9
  • Carol Stream, Illinois 0.5

The snowy conditions on Illinois roads came after light snow fell in northern Illinois Thursday night, with more light to moderate snow expected to continue until at least 10 a.m.

In Chicago, the Office of Communications and Emergency Management warned of black ice on the streets.

“Roads are slippery this morning,” said a message from the city on X. “Be careful of black ice and give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go.”

As of 6:30 a.m. Friday, snow was moving quickly south, with areas in Lake and Cook counties mostly dry. However, in Will, Kankakee counties and northwest Indiana, it was snowing constantly, reducing visibility, Roman said.

Just across the Wisconsin border, in Kenosha and Racine counties, a winter weather advisory was in effect, until 12 pm Friday, where one to two inches of snow could fall. In West Michigan, some schools were reportedly closed due to the weather.

The snow was expected to clear from most areas of northern Illinois around 10 a.m., Roman said. But around 2 p.m., a plume of lake-effect snow will move across parts of Lake, Cook and Will counties before moving east, Roman said.

Later Friday night in northwest Indiana, heavy snow was expected to continue falling, with an additional five centimeters possible in and around Valparaiso, the NWS said.

Winds will also increase on Friday, Roman said, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Temperatures were expected to remain stable around 30 degrees, Roman said.
