Man indicted by Amarillo grand jury after search finds over $3M worth of drugs

AMARILLO, Texas (KEYU) -A federal grand jury in Amarillo indicted a man after officials said they found methamphetamine and cocaine in his suitcase during a search in November.

Court documents indicate that on Nov. 19, an Amarillo Police Department officer was working a bus interdiction and used a certified police K-9 to conduct a free aerial luggage scan at the maintenance terminal used by Greyhound.

During the outdoor sniff, the K-9 alerted to the odor of narcotics on a suitcase in the luggage area of ​​the bus.

A search turned up 42 packages of suspected methamphetamine. Agents and officers were called to assist in the investigation.

Documents indicate that an agent saw suspect Iván Giovanni Díaz Trujillo approach the luggage area and take the suitcase containing the narcotics.

Officials arrested Trujillo for possession of the suitcase containing the narcotics.

One of the 41 packages that appeared to contain methamphetamine was tested and tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.

One package that appeared to be different than the other 41 packages was tested and tested positive for cocaine.

Court documents indicate the packages of methamphetamine had a gross weight of 65 pounds and the package of cocaine had a gross weight of 746.1 grams.

According to street value estimates, methamphetamine is worth about $2.9 million and cocaine is worth about $746,000.

According to officials, this amount of methamphetamine and cocaine is consistent with distribution and not personal use.

Authorities say Trujillo was also discovered to have a quantity of methamphetamine in a small plastic bag inside his wallet.

Trujillo admitted having bought the suitcase, but denied its contents.
