Pa man sentenced for vehicular homicide

TOWANDA PA – The Bradford County District Attorney announced the sentencing of a man for homicide committed by a motor vehicle while driving under the influence.

According to the release, Charles F. Scott of Towanda Pa. was sentenced to more than 63 months in state prison with a maximum sentence of more than 20 years.

Scott struck his victim while a child was being placed in a car seat on South Main St. in Towanda. Scott was driving a pickup truck, left the road and proceeded to hit the victim.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Both the child and the mother were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

According to the release, Scott had been drinking at a local bar near the accident. A bottle of Yuengling Lager was located outside Scott’s truck.

Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene and investigated the incident.

At the time of the incident, Scott had a prior arrest for driving under the influence from a month earlier. Scott has been found guilty of that crime by the Athens County Police Department.

Bradford County District Attorney Richard Wilson commented on the sentencing.

“There is nothing that can be done to recover the victim or repair the damage caused by Scott in this senseless act,” Wilson said. “However, the penalties here are the maximum allowed by law for these crimes. “Scott was found guilty of essentially the highest charges for each crime, and these convictions carry mandatory sentences that were applied.”

The district attorney’s office noted that Pennsylvania sentencing requires a minimum and maximum range.
