Violent crime down 7% from 2023, MPD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Police Department provided crime data updates to city council members Tuesday.

According to MPD, overall violent crime is down more than 7% compared to this time last year. The homicide rate has dropped 28% so far this year.

Interim Police Chief CJ Davis also says crime is trending down across the board, but they’re still not where they want to be.

City council members also questioned Davis about the additional safety measures his officers are taking to ensure crime goes down during the holidays.

“That’s why we have our community impact officers,” Davis said. “Most of them are retired detectives and they go out and do business and give them recommendations.”

Davis says homicides have a 54% clearance rate.

In the last 6 months, MPD has hired 12 new homicide investigators.

Davis says it’s important for business owners to make sure they are well equipped during the holiday season.

“Our team at the real-time crime center sends people out to help them identify the inexpensive types of cameras they can buy, and most of the time they follow that advice,” Davis said.
