President-elect Donald Trump opening week will be packed with festivities, including performances by some big names in music.
Country music star Carrie Underwood will sing “America the Beautiful,” while 1970s hitmakers the Village People will perform at two inaugural events.
Underwood, who launched her career on “American Idol,” will perform shortly beforehand. Trump takes the oath of office at the US Capitol on January 20. according to a copy of the inaugural program provided to The Associated Press on Monday.
“I love our country and I am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement Monday. “I am honored to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in a spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
American disco group Village People made a name for themselves in the late ’70s for their sing-along dance-pop hits and colorful stage personas. His best-known hit, “YMCA,” is widely considered a gay anthem and became a staple of Trump rallies in the last election, along with his hit “Macho Man.”
“We know some of you won’t be happy to hear this, however, we believe music should be performed without regard to politics,” the band said in a post on its Facebook page on Monday. “Our song YMCA is a global anthem that we hope will help unite the country after a tumultuous and divided campaign in which our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we believe the time has come to unite the country with music, which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at several events as part of Donald J. Trump’s inauguration in 2025.”
Other performers at the inauguration ceremony will include two of the president-elect’s musical favorites, country singer Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio.
Policy
Greenwood will perform as Trump leaves to take the oath of office, according to Trump’s inaugural committee. Macchio is Trump’s choice to perform the National Anthem at the end of the show.
Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 featured performances by the Rockettes, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and 16-year-old “America’s Got Talent” singer Jackie Evancho.
